    Us presentem el nostre patrimoni:

    peopleplacesstories cirat

    1Corta Mineira

  • For us, heritage is the past, present in the future.

Mining town of the Lousal (Grândola, Portugal)

    1Corta Mineira

The beginning of the exploitation of pyrite started in 1900 to obtain sulfur for the production of fertilizers. The company SAPEC closed the mine in 1988.

The mine was for a long time the only source of work for the population of the Lousal. To face territorial desertion, in 1994, the RELOUSAL project was created with the aim of promoting the rehabilitation of the socio-economic fabric, through programs involving the local population.

The project is developed and implemented by the Frédéric Velge Foundation, an entity created by the SAPEC company and the Grândola City Council. One goal of the intervention was to transform the mining landscape into a tourist destination of reference in the South of Portugal, respecting the memory and the identity of the premises, through the enhancement of the geological and mining heritage. In addition, this intervention was accompanied by environmental recovery work with the responsibility of the EDM – “Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro”.

Since the beginning of RELOUSAL, a Craft Centre, a Rural Hotel, a Restaurant, a Museum and a Science Centre named "Mine of Science" have been created. The Mining Museum, inaugurated in May 2001, is installed in the old Power Plant, responsible for the production of energy for the entire mining industrial complex of the Lousal between 1934 and 1992. The Ciência Viva Centre - "Mina de Ciência", inaugurated on June 30, 2010, is a modern center with interactive modules dedicated to Natural Sciences, Exact Sciences and the virtual world and Graphic Computing. Finally, the Waldemar Gallery was inaugurated on July 27, 2015, and allows an underground journey with about 300 meters along the first addit of the mine, from the early twentieth century.

O que você acha e sente o patrimônio cultural realmente significa? Aldeia Mineira do Lousal (Grândola, Portugal)

  • I don’t remember the day this photo was taken. It was probably one of my uncles who was responsible. My grandparents, my cousin and I on any given Sunday. The photo, which I came upon by chance, captures a moment, long past, that will never return, except in our memories.

What makes this photo important? What makes it different from the rest?

Our concept of heritage breaks free from the rigid confines of the institutional and official definition and moves us closer to a more intimate vision. Personal.Individual and unique. Subjective because we are subjects.

But this individual construction of our world, of our reality and of our heritages is only a starting point for a collective elaboration of what we think and feel our heritage is. In this process, our personal belongings are transformed into the starting points to build our collective imaginations. And these links constitute the examples to define, by all of us, those elements which we consider important based on our experience, education, training, personal situation . . . In short, based on our lives.

We are talking therefore, about a complex, plural and conflictive vision of heritage. Prismatic with many nuances. Which generates controversy and requires consensus and also a necessary legitimacy of a political nature, because the sum of all these looks creates a broader sense of our heritages, its values and meanings.

That simple photo sums up much of my life. Who I am and why I am what I am. From that perspective, that day with my grandparents and my cousin seems very important, doesn’t it?

  • Preserving the past while building for the future
In the course of the application of the heritage conservation principles, it is important to note that the communities are the ones breathing life into the heritage. The monuments we inherited - these fortified churches - were built hundreds of years ago to protect the community from invaders. Today we believe their role is to bring welfare to the same communities that own them.

The spirit of community is what primarily motivates people to preserve their culture and heritage. This spirit is born out of the feeling of attachment, belonging and responsibility for the culture, identity, origins and for the heritage received from our ancestors. In Viscri the community spirit was and is truly important. This is why over 860 years of village history, the Transylvanian Saxon dialect is still alive and the village houses are still inhabited.

Today it is important for the villagers to reconnect with their identity, which was forgotten during communism. It is important for the young to become aware of the value of their heritage and to feel proud of their history and culture.

For the development of a community that lives in harmony with the heritage, it is essential for the people to constantly acquire skills which allow them to thrive in the long term. The instilment of the community spirit in the young generations needs to be initiated early on. In order to gradually diminish indifference and passivity from a community, we need a lot of effort, knowledge and perseverance and capable leaders. Conclusively, the effects of such educational initiatives induce results that influence and inspire the generations to come.

  • FORESTA: 20 hectares of wild « nature » (part of it backfill for the huge mall close by built in the 90’s), at the heart of the so disregarded and stigmatised Northern districts of Marseilles. The owners of this land (the company Resiliance ) have given carte blanche to local people to imagine, create there collectively a place where one could stroll leisurely, run and jump, ride bicycles or donkeys, meet friends, family, neighbours you did not know, express and share talents, learn and teach… An artists’ collective, Yes we camp , an inhabitants’ cooperative, Hôtel du Nord, the artists and walkers’team Le Bureau des guides du GR2013, local associations and community centers, schools and hundreds of residents around got together and let their dreams, wishes, needs come (partly) true…

Now they know all about the history of this magnificent clay hill overlooking the sea, the Marquis of Foresta’s castle up there until 1944, but also about the vines growing there a long time ago, the names, the scent, the taste, the colours and shapes of so many wild plants here, to-day… All kinds of workshops were organised : how to make a bread oven, how to use reeds… There were explorations and walks : heritage walks, historical walks, horticultural walks… and there were joyful and eventful special days for all to share and enjoy… We do not know anything yet about the future of Foresta. Is it a utopia? An experience? A project?… Will it become this Metropolitan Park that the local people, humble and many talented citizens, created from nothing and wanted to offer to all? The story goes on…

L’histoire continue…

  • We could define the peninsula of Troia in several different ways.

We could describe it as a desert land, with amazing beaches, translucid waters and white sands.

Yet, we could also describe how the people from both sides of the Sado River express a sense of belonging related to Troia. They call it “The” Troia. There is a myth saying that “the” Troia was razed to the ground by a sandstorm.

And then, we would describe how Our Lady of Troia keeps the hearts of these people that return every year to pay her a tribute.

The chapel of Troia dates at least from the 15th century, but stands on two thousand years old ruins. One can wonder: what if the omnipresence of those ruins has something to do with all the traditions and with the feelings of those people?

So, to tell you about Troia, we would have to make you discover the remains of the largest industrial complex of fish sauce of the Roman Empire. Such a hard concept, right?

And again, why does that mean something today?

For us, the answer is simple: through it we can make a modest contribution to people’s happiness. By saying this, we mean we work every day as archaeologists in the Roman ruins of Troia to promote people’s identity, creativity, education, well-being, freedom of thought…

In our work we experience how people only connect to the place after they comprehend its history. So, we have to tell the story thousands of times in several different ways.

It is our mission that each person, from the youngest to the oldest, not only learns the stories but has the freedom and the power to explore his imagination and his own connection to the place.

Chamam-lhe “A” Troia.

  • Only 10 years ago, Mouraria was an enclave in the center of Lisbon. The locals avoided it, the tourists ignored it. The inhabitants of this vast territory could do little to counter the bad reputation of their neighborhood, where living conditions worsened day by day. It was precisely 10 years ago that the Renovar a Mouraria Association (ARM) was born, on March 19, 2008, with a plan to overturn these barriers.

At the scale and pace of the community, ARM has since worked to improve people's lives by empowering them civically and professionally, strengthening their economic power, developing their community spirit and educating them to defend their historic heritage, cultural and human. Particularly in recent years, the ARM has been following the profound changes in the territory (the growth of tourism and the gentrification of historic areas), pressing policy makers to combat their harms and to maximize their benefits.

Colors, smells, sounds, medieval houses and narrow streets, dozens of cultures that cohabit and intersect in nostalgia for the sound of the Tibetan or kora cups. A cauldron of inheritances that makes of the people the greater patrimony of the district of Mouraria.

    mourariap

  • Heritage is a meeting place and place to learn. Heritage is the the place where people from different backgrounds and from different generations discover a common past, which unites them in the present and projected them into a future settled in our cultural tradition.

Heritage a place for children and culture

Heritage is the transmission belt of our essence, of our identity, the mirror where we see ourselves reflected, the connection to who we are as a result of the passing of time, in which people and events have built our reality current. We must, therefore, to know, to recreate, to enrich, and to share our heritage.

The cultural programme "Emilianensis. Discover the monasteries of La Rioja", contributes to o disseminate the cultural heritage, tangible and intangible, located around the the monasteries of Suso and Yuso, in San Millán de la Cogolla. Thousands of children, young people and adults, locals and foreigners, have learned about ways of life and trades already forgotten, transmitted from generation to generation to build the commun European Cultural Heritage.
